Larry Smith

Larry has a wealth of broad-based practical finance and tax management expertise that spans more than 25 years in leading global multi-national companies, as well as experience early in his career working on tax policy, tax controversy and cutting-edge transactions at a leading international law firm and in the Chief Counsel’s Office of the Internal Revenue Service.

Larry recently served as Chief Financial Officer at Revelar Biotherapeutics Corporation and as Chief Operating Officer at Solaxa Inc. and has also co-founded and advised other private companies.  Prior to joining Revelar, Larry served as Bruker Corporation’s Chief Tax Officer and Treasurer where he restructured the Company’s debt structure to raise $1.2B while reducing its interest expense by 50% and devised tax strategy to resolve protracted bilateral transfer pricing controversies.  Prior to Bruker, Larry proactively led Endo International plc’s tax function for four years. At Endo, Larry built a world-class cross-enterprise global team to overhaul corporate strategy and create a competitive advantage that was recognized by financial analysts and Endo’s Board.

Prior to Endo, Larry led Danaher Corporation’s tax function for 7 years with responsibilities including tax provision and compliance, tax planning and structuring/advising on mergers and acquisitions. Larry built and led a team of more than 80 tax professionals spanning Danaher’s decentralized global operations to significantly reduce Danaher’s tax rate. Prior to Danaher, Larry was a senior tax executive at Merck & Co., Inc. from 2003 to mid-2007.  Larry was responsible for Merck’s long range global tax planning including transfer pricing, intellectual property ownership, structuring and advising on licensing, mergers, acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures and other corporate business development transactions, and led the repatriation of $15.8 billion of foreign earnings under the American Jobs Creation Act.

Prior to Merck, Larry served as Senior Tax Counsel to Lucent Technologies for six years.

Prior to Lucent, Larry was a tax attorney with Dewey Ballantine LLP where he represented clients including semiconductor and energy industry trade associations before Congress, the IRS and Treasury regarding tax policy matters, structured and negotiated domestic and international transactions and assisted in tax controversies and litigation including two high profile transfer pricing cases.

Larry received his LL.M. in Taxation with distinction from Georgetown University School of Law, his J.D. with high honors from the Duke University School of Law and his BBA degree magna cum laude from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business with a concentration in Accounting & Finance. Larry also received a certificate in Leadership in the Global Enterprise from Thunderbird School of Global Management and in Mastering Capital Markets from Babson College.
